LUPEC 2: Victory Garden Cocktails

16 Aug

For August, Firefly moved LUPEC 2’s meeting up a couple of weeks in order to treat the group to a City Park Jazz performance as well as some delightful Victory Garden cocktails!

Clockwise from top: Cocky Carrot, Sweet & Spicy Strawberry, Zen Press, Beet Mojito

LUPEC Name: Firefly

Meeting Date: 8/8/2010

Meeting Theme: Victory Garden Cocktails

Why did you choose this theme?

I wanted to do something a little different and host the meeting at City Park, incorporating the USO show closing out the City Park Jazz concert season. While brainstorming themes, I really started to focus on vegetable and fruit related cocktails, which, after a talk with the lovely Italian Stinger, turned into a more focused theme of drinks based on the fruits and vegetables grown in Victory Gardens of the 1940’s!

Delicious and beautiful beet mojitos!

What were the cocktails you served?

Happy Apple – Delightful and not too sweet.
Cocky Carrot – Not so delightful, somewhat disgusting.
Sweet & Spicy Strawberry – Yummy, and not as spicy as it smelled!
Beet Mojito – Sweet, delicious and beautiful.
Zen Press – The most popular of the cocktails served, absolutely refreshing and perfectly sweet.

What food was served/brought?

Gin & Sin brought a wonderful Indian inspired salad with vegetables fresh from her garden! Other yummy foods included sandwiches/finger sandwiches, cookies, shrimp cocktail, and hummus with pita and vegetables! Sorry if I left anything out!

Anything else you’d like to say about your meeting?

Everyone was in great spirits while enjoying cocktails on picnic blankets – even when the scorching sun turned into a rain shower. After the meeting, we swooned over a Frank Sinatra impersonator/singer and had a great time listening and critiquing the USO show. All in all, it was a great afternoon in the park with the ever amazing ladies of LUPEC!

The Vamp and Firefly enjoy their mojitos!

Recipe, please!

1 inch of cucumber, peeled and cut into ¼ inch rounds
3/4 jigger lemongrass syrup ***
1 ounce Gin
Sprite or Seltzer

Muddle cucumber slices in the bottom of a glass. Add lemongrass syrup and gin. Stir, and strain into a glass. Add ice, and top with a splash of Sprite and Seltzer.

*** To make a Zen Press you also have to make the Lemongrass Syrup.

Lemongrass Syrup
1 cup sugar
1 cup water
1 stalk lemongrass

Place sugar and water into a small pan. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until the sugar crystals have dissolved. Slice the pale, fleshy base of lemon grass into small rounds and add to the sugar and water mixture. Let the syrup cool for at least 30 minutes, or longer for stronger flavoring. Strain
